CHSL Cards - Branding
9 February 2017
When we launched CHSL Cards, we needed a logo. I wanted to do something that referenced classical literature without drawing a book. Books are cool, but they’re a little over-used for writing apps. So, instead, I looked to the characters in some of my favorite stories.
The first character was Aslan. He’s just about as iconic of a character as you can get. I sketched him out freehand maybe 12 times before I made a version of him that I actually liked. But he needed something else.
I don’t know what made me think of it, perhaps it was being surrounded by Disney every day, but Alice in Wonderland came to mind. I didn’t think it was doable to drop Alice into the logo, too. Instead, I went a bit more subtle and pulled in the roses. Those made a natural frame for Aslan.
Originally, I wanted to include other characters as well. When I got into it, the more I added, the weaker the design felt. In the end, Aslan and the roses felt like the right choice for a finished piece. The rest of the characters have been locked away for another project for the same suite of applications.
